"What is this oozing behemoth, this fibrous tumor, this monster of power and expense hatched from the simple human desire for civic order? How did an allegedly free people spawn a vast, rampant cuttlefish of dominion with its tentacles in every orifice of the body politic?"
--"Parliament of Whores", P.J. O'Rourke, before the Early Onset Trump Derangement Syndrome took him so tragically from us
The phrase "Parliament of Whores" is of course grossly unfair. To whores.
John Hindraker: You Can Vote For Conservatism, But You Can’t Get It
"I first made that observation–you can vote for conservatism, but you can’t get it–quite a few years ago. Sadly, it remains true, as exemplified by the $1.3 trillion spending monstrosity that President Trump signed today. ...
Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi are gleeful, as they should be. They are in an enviable position: they don’t have to win elections in order to govern.
You can read the roll call vote here. [Democrat] leadership obviously made sure there were plenty of Yes votes to pass the bill. But the Senate Democrats who are seeking national office all voted No: Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
Why? I’m not sure...maybe they just don’t want to vote for any bill that Donald Trump signs. In any event, they are all staking out a position to the left of an outcome that has Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer popping champagne corks. ...
But back to the original point: all Republicans, and some Democrats, run on a platform of smaller government, less spending and lower taxes. Voters, more often than not, elect such candidates. But the forces pressing for more and more spending, toward ends that are increasingly removed from the proper purposes of government, are inexorable. Barack Obama said that elections matter. He was only half right: you can vote for conservatism, but you can’t get it.".......
Daily Caller: BROKEN PROMISE: Trump, GOP Congress Give Planned Parenthood $500 Million In Taxpayer Funds
"Trump, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and other Republican leaders promised their voters for years that they would defund Planned Parenthood if given the chance to govern. Now, with Republican majorities in the House and Senate and a Republican in the White House, the nation’s number one killer of unborn children will continue receiving hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer funding.".......
There is no nice way to put it. He should have been involved sooner, put his foot down and gone with his instincts.
In fairness, though, we keep sending RINOs to Congress for him to work with. Not to mention traitorous anti-American Democrats who would gladly hobble the military to ensure victories for our enemies. And where Obama got a Nobel Prize for nothing when he was elected, President Trump got a Special Counsel for nothing.
Everywhere the president turns is another steaming turd, crapped out on the national living room carpet by Barack Obama, the Clintons and their RINO pals. The Professional Class have driven this country into a ditch, yet they all think they're champion NASCAR drivers.
So I have some sympathy. It's not unlike grudgingly certifying the Iran Deal, which he also had to do. The president promised to never again sign one of these budgetary betrayals:
“There are a lot of things I’m unhappy about in this bill. There are a lot of things that we shouldn’t have had in this bill, but we were in a sense forced if we want to build our military. I said to Congress 'I will never sign another bill like this again'.”
Congress' main function is to write a real budget and they have failed and failed for years.
The president can't fight every battle at once and he can't do it alone. It's time to primary these overpaid time-servers.
While disappointed, I'm not about to give up on the only fighter we've had since 1989.
"In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem. From time to time we've been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? ... We are a nation that has a government—not the other way around. And this makes us special among the nations of the Earth. Our government has no power except that granted it by the people. It is time to check and reverse the growth of government, which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed. It is my intention to curb the size and influence of the Federal establishment and to demand recognition of the distinction between the powers granted to the Federal Government and those reserved to the States or to the people. All of us need to be reminded that the Federal Government did not create the States; the States created the Federal Government. ... It is no coincidence that our present troubles parallel and are proportionate to the intervention and intrusion in our lives that result from unnecessary and excessive growth of government."--Jan. 20, 1981 UPDATE: In addition to military pay raises, here's another bright spot: "The passage of the Taylor Force Act is a silver lining — and a milestone in foreign policy that could save taxpayers money. The Taylor Force Act will end U.S. aid to the Palestinian Authority (PA) as long as it pays stipends to Palestinian terrorists — either those in Israeli prisons, or the families of those who are deceased. Named for a U.S. Army veteran who was stabbed to death by a Palestinian terrorist while he was visiting Israel in 2016, the law was championed by Republicans."....... |
