The Budget Deal is Lame, Though
Trump is right: "The reason for the [budget] plan negotiated between the Republicans and Democrats is that we need 60 votes in the Senate which are not there! We either elect more Republican Senators in 2018 or change the rules now to 51%. Our country needs a good "shutdown" in September to fix mess!"
We should stop saying "Republicans have control of the Senate." Republicans have technical control, but the Senate is a 60-vote institution for most legislation, and it takes a supermajority to change those rules. It's a-constitutional, but there it is.
That's why Obamacare wasn't passed until turncoat Arlen Specter switched parties, making the 60th vote. It was some consolation to see Harry Reid stiff Specter on seniority, but, hey, nobody likes a weasel, even King Weasel Reid. Well, almost nobody.
I don't like this budget; it stinks. But I'm going to give Trump some space. First, he inherited a world in flames, literally and figuratively. Secondly, we can't fight every battle every time. A shutdown would not be wise given the circumstances. Republicans should have done better, but Obama, the Clintons and Co. have so degraded the Republic that treason, perversion, cultural suicide, graft and Communism are now mainstream Democrat values. But that doesn't mean Democrats always get their way.
Trump should take them up on a shutdown next time just as he says. And start firing federal employees by the thousands until he gets their attention. Shutdown is your friend, Donald. Don't buy the Conventional Wisdom(tm). You got where you are by ignoring it.
The choice on Health Care was never between the ideal and Obamacare. This is about the best we can get right now. Sorry, I don't like that fact either, but it's true. This bill a step forward. After years of going backwards and spiraling downwards, a modest step forward is good news. It will also help the tax project. Don Surber:
House just passed a trillion-dollar tax cut: "By a 217-213 vote, the House passed a trillion-dollar tax cut on Thursday and sent it to the Senate. Every Democrat voted against it, as did 20 turncoat Republicans ...That is exactly what happened when the House voted to replace Obamacare and replace it with something saner. Rolling back Obamacare also rolled back the taxes the Democratic Party imposed. ...I came up with a total of $1,489,000,000,000 in tax cuts or nearly $1.5 trillion." .......
I can live with that.
For now.
UPDATE: The Washington Examiner:
"In an alternate universe, right now we'd be having an argument about a free market system that costs taxpayers less money, offers broader choice and lower premiums, and does not try to put government in the business of making sure everybody obtains coverage vs. a system that offers more subsidies and comprehensive insurance to individuals, while depriving younger and healthier individuals the option of less comprehensive, lower cost insurance. Healthier Americans may ultimately decide that they're willing to pay drastically higher premiums and accept less choice in exchange for helping make insurance more affordable and comprehensive for older and sicker individuals. But at least it would be an honest debate. Republicans have decided they can't win that debate, so instead they decided to embrace liberal philosophy as it pertains to broad coverage, but then try to graft it onto a plan that they can call "repeal and replace."
The result is a plan that repeals and replaces the law in a piecemeal manner and disrupts the insurance market in ways that health policy enthusiasts are still trying to figure out. Republicans are engaging in a debate over how many people they can cover and whether the bill does as much or more than Obamacare for individuals with pre-existing conditions, rather than producing a bill that would actually reduce costs. They've surrendered on philosophy and managed to vote for a politically unpopular bill anyway.".......
In an "alternate universe", perhaps. But we have this universe, where a lot of Republicans are really Democrats because a lot of Democrats are really socialists, if not communists.
I support this effort.
