Disney's Splash Mountain ride, the famous log flume that's popular at both the Disneyland and Disney World theme parks, is getting a facelift. And not just any ol' facelift, but a major one that will finally scrub Splash Mountain of its ties to Walt Disney's infamously insensitive 1946 film Song of the South.

The Walt Disney Parks division announced Thursday that a project to "completely reimagine" Splash Mountain began last year, and that the ride's new theme is inspired by Disney's 2009 animated film The Princess and the Frog. The film notably stars Disney's first black princess, Tiana, who arrived 72 years after Snow White kicked off the Disney Princess canon.

Among the victims of the "re-imagining" is this once beloved song, a three-decade fixture at Splash Mountain complete with special lyrics. ...

When you're told you can no longer sing a song, the only response is to cry "Encore!" and bellow it even louder. So here from a couple of years back is my Song of the Week essay on "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah"...

Song of the South was a rather bold film in its day. The leading man was a black actor, and indeed the first such ever to win an Oscar. And, even more striking, the trio of young tykes capering through the picture is, as we would now say, multiracial. Walt Disney was so anxious to avoid accusations of "Uncle Tomism" he hired Maurice Rapf, a Jewish Communist, to work on the script and keep it sufficiently au courant with enlightened thinking on the racial question. Mr Rapf was so up to the minute in progressive thinking that shortly before the picture's release he was outed as a Red by The Hollywood Reporter and became more or less the original blacklisted screenwriter. (He would up teaching Film Studies down the road from me at Dartmouth College.)

All this ultimately availed Disney naught. Joel Chandler Harris' rendering of Negro dialect came to be seen as "stereotyping", and, notwithstanding that the movie is set in the Reconstruction south rather than the slavery era, the scenes of plantation life were offensively idyllic to those who can't tell late-nineteenth-century dress from antebellum garb. So Song of the South is the only Disney feature never to be released on video or DVD, and thus has the distinction of being an early victim of our culture's intolerance of anything non-conforming to the pieties of the last three days.".......

An apology from Peris did little to assuage students and faculty. According to Fox News, Chwe and company alleged Peris’s act of contrition “escalated the situation rather than engaging in […] thoughtful and open discourse.”

Hattie McDaniel is one the greatest and most inspiring success stories in Hollywood history. But hers is a story we have become uncomfortable telling, which is very sad. Born of parents who had both been slaves, her father a Union soldier in the Civil War, McDaniel cut her teeth and earned her chops originally in early 20th Century Minstrel Shows. But now it is no longer sufficient to erase the Minstrel Show, now the performance that netted the first Academy Award for a black actor must also be toppled and hid away like some statue of a Confederate general.  This is truly a case where the baby has been thrown out with the bathwater. This is part of a broader erasure of black performers from the first decades of the 20th Century.  HBO promises that the ‘Gone With The Wind’ will return, eventually placed in some kind of context. Perhaps a panel discussion appended to the movie, or a warning label, who really knows? But who are they protecting and from what? Americans know that slavery was brutal and evil; they aren’t going to watch the movie and suddenly think it was fine. That we can watch this phenomenal award-winning performance from a child of slaves is little short of a miracle. " .......

Mia was originally created for Land O’Lakes packaging in 1928. In 1939, she was redesigned as a native maiden kneeling in a farm field holding a butter box. In 1954, my father, Patrick DesJarlait, redesigned the image again.

My father had been interested in art since boyhood, when he drew images related to his Ojibwe culture. After leaving Pipestone boarding school in Minnesota in 1942, he joined the Navy and was assigned to San Diego, where he worked alongside animation artists from MGM and Walt Disney producing brochures and films for the war effort. In 1946, he established himself as one of the first modernists in American Indian fine art.

After I was born in 1946, my family moved from Red Lake, Minn., to Minneapolis, where my father broke racial barriers by establishing himself as an American Indian commercial artist in an art world dominated by white executives and artists. In addition to the Mia redesign, his many projects included creating the Hamm’s Beer bear. By often working with Native American imagery, he maintained a connection to his identity.

"This (1954)project was a redesign. DesJarlait made changes, but the changes he made were very intentional… both to the woman featured (‘Mia’), but even specific details in the setting where she was pictured. When his father was finished, that image was modified so that it featured a real-world location: The Narrows — something that would be immediately recognizable to any Tribal Citizen of Red Lake. He made intentional changes in the woman’s appearance, too.

"With the redesign, my father made Mia’s Native American connections more specific. He changed the beadwork designs on her dress by adding floral motifs that are common in Ojibwe art. He added two points of wooded shoreline to the lake that had often been depicted in the image’s background. It was a place any Red Lake tribal citizen would recognize as the Narrows, where Lower Red Lake and Upper Red Lake meet."

Both sets of changes were significant in that they were faithful to real-world realities. When the woman was quietly removed from the butter box, and the land left behind, that quickly became a meme, including one quote that caught traction, “They got rid of the Indian and Kept the Land.”

Now that we know that land was intended to depict Red Lake the artist’s home, this statement is all the more damning.

And that’s exactly what concerned Tina Peters — because if there had been election tampering or code designed to manipulate results, this process would have erased it. Rather than sit by, Tina Peters acted, doing what any responsible election official should: she sought to preserve the evidence.

Tina Peters is currently facing a nine-year prison sentence. Representing her is Peter Ticktin, a seasoned attorney and longtime friend of President Donald Trump, who has recently parachuted into her case to advocate for her immediate release on bond while her state-level appeal is pending. Flags of Our Farther Fathers

"In the UK, which is already lost, the subjugated population is attempting one last act of defiance before they are put under Sharia law.

Actually-English citizens are flying the English flag -- the St. George's flag, white with a red cross, officially disfavored by the UK government because they don't like Englanders thinking of themselves as English -- while the UK police take the flags down.

They're flying St. George's cross as part of "Operation Raise the Colours."

What is "raising the colours" about? - Matt Goodwin:

In recent days, from Birmingham to Tower Hamlets, ordinary British and English people have, seemingly spontaneously, started to raise Union Jack and St George's flags on lampposts and buildings. Some have even painted flags on roundabouts.

The campaign started last week when it was revealed flags of St George and the Union had started to spring up in neighbourhoods in Birmingham, in what the local people taking part described as "a patriotic outpouring". Local residents even set up a GoFundMe website to help purchase more flags and support the displays.

Shortly afterwards, however, local council workers quickly began taking down the flags, arguing the "unauthorised items" were "dangerous", on the basis they might distract and even kill passing motorists and pedestrians.

Yet many, understandably, see glaring hypocrisy.

While the Labour-run council in highly-diverse Birmingham is now rushing to take down English and Union flags, it has left Palestinian flags flying for months (for its part, in what is another depressing insight into the dire state of modern Britain, the council says it needs police protection to remove Palestine flags in Muslim areas).

At the same time, Birmingham council is pulling down Union Jack and St George's flags while seemingly having no issue lighting the taxpayer-funded library building in green and white to celebrate the independence of ... Pakistan.

All of which helps to explain why, unsurprisingly, some locals have started to rebel by joining the "raise the colours" campaign. And nor are they alone.

In similarly diverse Tower Hamlets, in east London, residents have also been spotted raising flags on lampposts, while the local council, run by the pro-Gaza Aspire Party which has also left Palestine flags flying for months, just vowed to remove any English and British flags "as soon as possible".

Yet things seem to be spiralling.

Social media is currently filled with viral pictures and videos of seemingly ordinary people --builders, workers, citizens--going to great lengths to "raise the colours", suggesting this campaign may yet gain momentum and, perhaps, go national.

What is going on?

On one level, this is very clearly a spontaneous and organic act of resistance against what we have often talked about in this newsletter --the ongoing and very extreme policies of mass uncontrolled immigration, broken borders, and housing illegal migrants in the heart of Britain's communities while forcing the British people to pay billions for the privilege and then using their own money to rig the housing market so that it favours illegal migrants and asylum-seekers over the British people.

As one local resident of Birmingham remarked, people in the area have simply "had enough". "This isn't racism", they went on, "it's frustration at being pushed into a corner and silenced".

But this is also clearly about something else, something deeper. And to make sense of it it's worth returning to conservative philosopher Sir Roger Scruton.

"The English", Scruton once said, "are reluctant to display their identity -- reluctant to sing their national anthem, to wave their flag, or to affirm their nationhood".

What he meant is that the English have long had a very uneasy relationship with national symbols, even feeling embarrassed about the kind of displays of national pride that would appear entirely ordinary in, say, America.

A combination of post-imperial guilt, mass immigration, a model of multiculturalism that prioritises minorities over the majority, and the rise of a so-called 'progressive' elite have all established a taboo around flags, discouraging people from raising them.

But Scruton, rightly, saw this as a bad thing for British society and the future.

He warned that the taboo around national symbols and flying the flag deprived the British and the English of something that could be incredibly powerful and precious.

Such displays, he argued, were not merely symbols of exclusion, as elites argue, but could become a powerful, unifying emblem of a shared identity, a shared sense of history and collective memory, and a shared way of life.

A flag, in other words, is not just a symbol; it is where the individual connects with their collective cultural inheritance. It is where the individual can locate themselves in something greater which they also, in turn, recognise as their home.

Without this, warned Scruton, nations will soon run into major problems.

The reluctance to fly the flag in England, he suggested, brought with it huge costs, including what he described as "the steady erosion of something precious --a shared first-person plural", or, in other words, a shared sense of "we".

With no sense of shared identity or culture, and few symbols to give expression to this, Scruton warned that the British and the English would soon be left vulnerable to endless, ongoing cultural fragmentation and rootlessness, no longer sure who they are, where they belong, or what is 'home'.

Which is how, I would suggest, millions of people on these islands are starting to feel, if they do not feel this way already.

Bombarded by mass immigration. Appalled by open borders. Angered and frustrated by a ruling class and a 'two-tier' society that puts minorities ahead of the majority.

And utterly demoralised by a political system that is mainstreaming Lebanon-style sectarianism, from pandering to Islamism to Labour MPs showing more interest in Pakistan than Britain, many people can now feel that sense of "we" evaporating.

Furthermore, as reflected in the response of Birmingham and Tower Hamlets councils, or the school in Rugby that turned away a schoolgirl who wore a Union Jack dress to a 'Culture Day', many British and English people are now also starting to grasp the extent to which their leaders are invested in rejecting, repudiating, or suppressing their identity, history, and culture --what Scruton called "Oikophobia".

Alex Jones noted that if it's illegal to raise your own country's flag, that means you're now living in an occupied country.

Why Don't I Like Him? - Outspoken with Dr Naomi Wolf:

"I started to feel guilty, in reacting on social media to New York City Democratic nominee Zohran Kwame Mamdani: to this immediate legacy-media darling, this Uganda-born, collectivization-advocating, smugly smiling, beautifully beard-groomed Bowdoin graduate, whose expensive, cleverly packaged Mayoral race launched him into our collective consciousness a few months ago, out of thin air. I try never to be personal, in my political assessments, and I feel guilty because my reaction to Mamdani is so personally aversive.

It is aversive because of the lie-and-deception factor.

Mamdani, as I will reveal, is a nepo son dressed as a communist — but a communist takeover of NYC is not what really motivates this man, not what is really behind this campaign.

Apart from the full-spectrum communist agenda which Mamdani superficially offers, one reason for my sense of personal queasiness when I consider this candidate in various settings is because I know guys like this. Though I am of another generation, some things do not change.

I went to school with guys like this. They are Jaspers. Let’s call that archetypal guy, Jasper.

“The people! United! Will never be defeated!” That’s for the march on the campus green. Then — let’s all go have a latte at the dining club. 

This cosplay lasts just so long, before they go back to scooping up the vast privileges of their perches on the better-paid edges of the visual arts, or of filmmaking, as they let the interest in their trust funds compound.

In my experience, when it comes down to their personal wellbeing and comfort, I have learned that Jaspers will, right-on pronouncements or no, personally sacrifice nothing.

That’s why I was not surprised when the news broke that Zohran Mamdani lives in a rent-stabilized $2300 a month one-bedroom apartment in Queens. His supporters flocked to defend this situation, stating that there are no income caps for rent-stabilized apartments. That is true now, but was not true from 2011 to 2019; if Mamdani’s $142,000 plus salary, in addition to any other income he had, rose above the cap of $200,000 a year, or if his now-wife or another household member was living with him then, and earning income over $58,000, Mamdani would have been in violation of the program regulations, which were obviously designed to help struggling middle- and working-class New Yorkers: “Between July 1, 2011, and June 13, 2019: [the limit for rent-stabilized housing was] household income above $200,000 for two consecutive years, with the rent at or above $2,500 initially, then adjusted to $2,700 and increasing annually.”

Why am I nitpicking about this? It matters.

One reason is economic unfairness. The average Queens market rate one-bedroom is $4216 a month. So if Mamdani is now living in a rent-stabilized apartment he secured in violation of the pre-2019 rules, he is saving $1916 a month, or $22,992 a year. Now, imagine that you are a trust fund kid and don’t need those savings to live on. Watch it compound. Watch your money, in contrast, — if you need it to live on from month to month — not compound.

Mamdani’s privileged smarminess in taking up an apartment, in violation of the regulations or not, that was clearly intended to benefit people who can’t afford to pay more — and then his defending that decision by hairsplitting — is typical of how these rich young men behave. The Jaspers are always letting others pick up the check. They are always finding the loophole, the tax write-off, the way around the rules, that does not apply to the boring, hardworking rest of us. And their hypocrisy in doing so, even while presenting themselves as champions of the downtrodden, is never, ever evident to them.

I saw the same character pattern when it came to Mamdani’s application to Columbia University. Now, all of us overachievers heading to elite universities, at 19, desperately tried to see if there were ways to get an advantage in the application process. There is nothing unusual about that. But Mamdani’s Columbia University application is a kind of Mobius Strip of wokeness, twisting in upon itself and ending up on an indeterminate plane: Mamdani’s father was a Columbia University professor, so already his application would have garnered favorable attention not available to non-faculty kids. So he is already privileged as a “legacy.” Plus he descends from wealthy parents, which counts, as Ivies are expensive. But no! He sought to compound his actual double privilege with purported double victimization/oppression. So he checked “Black or African American” and “Asian” on his application, and wrote in “Ugandan.” ...

He is neither Black nor African American.

But no. ...

Leaving aside the issue of why there is so much murkiness (two purchase dates, huge valuation) around these four mystery unimproved acres of Ugandan land, and of what all that may mean in entrusting Mamdani, who was a rapper before he was an Assemblyman, who has had almost no jobs (one was for his mom), who has no business background at all, — a man who passed only three bills as an Assembly member and who was absent half of the time, with the highest absentee rate in the Assembly - with the management of the most valuable real estate infrastructure in America, and with a $2.1 trillion dollar economy, the largest metropolitan economy on earth —

Why are almost all of this candidates’ assets still located in a foreign country?

Mamdani became a naturalized citizen only in 2018, the year before he ran for office. Indeed, he is not solely an American citizen. He is a dual citizen.

His marriage is offshore, his land is offshore.

Why would you come to America at 7 and only become a naturalized citizen decades later, just before you run for office in America? ...

Zohran Mamdani is like a socially acceptable drug for guilty affluent white people.

That is quite a big and significantly magnanimous position to take by President Trump.

Hopefully, the MAGA base will eventually come around to this understanding, because right now they are intensely expecting criminal accountability.  That’s not President Trump’s goal, he’s thinking much bigger and more consequential that holding the irrelevant gnats accountable.
